In this presentation, we will discuss the design/development of (meta)heuristic algorithms to tackle new optimization problems. We will explore how the characteristics of the problem at hand guide, and often restrict, the selection of a suitable optimization strategy. For that, we will focus on a combinatorial problem that arises in the area of statistics: the optimal design of experiments.
